Why BRICS Matter in a Multipolar World

Updated: Oct 23

The BRICS coalition - comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and, as of 2024, a growing list of new members - matters now more than ever. Despite not being a formal organization, BRICS serves as a powerful bloc of non-Western economies that coordinate their economic and diplomatic efforts around a shared vision: countering what they view as Western dominance in key global institutions like the World Bank, the Group of Seven (G7), and the UN Security Council.

This alignment reflects a deep-rooted desire for an alternative global order. For years, these countries have felt sidelined in decision-making processes dominated by the West. By banding together, BRICS seeks to amplify the voice of the Global South and create a counterbalance to Western-centric viewpoints in major multilateral groupings.

The 2024 expansion of BRICS carries profound geopolitical significance. With new members on board, the bloc now represents over a quarter of the global economy and nearly half of the world’s population. This demographic and economic weight makes BRICS a formidable player in shaping the future of the international order.

BRICS is becoming increasingly pivotal. It plays a significant role in the competition between China and the West, particularly in areas like technology, trade, and finance. Furthermore, the bloc is likely to be a key player in global efforts to transition to clean energy, a critical concern in the fight against climate change.

Despite its growing strength, BRICS faces considerable challenges. One of the primary issues is the increasing pushback from Western countries that view the bloc’s rise as a challenge to their global influence. As BRICS expands, it becomes harder to ignore its role as an alternative global power, sparking tensions with Western-led institutions.

Moreover, the group’s internal dynamics could become strained as membership increases. The BRICS coalition is not monolithic, and its members have differing national interests. Navigating these internal divisions will be crucial for the bloc’s future. Experts agree that the ability of BRICS to act as a unified voice on the global stage depends on how its members manage these growing tensions.

As BRICS expands and solidifies its position, the world may witness the emergence of a more multipolar global order, one where power is not concentrated in the hands of a few Western nations but shared among diverse, emerging economies. How BRICS members balance their internal differences and navigate external pressures will ultimately determine the future role of the bloc in global affairs.

In a world increasingly shaped by geopolitical shifts, the BRICS matter - not just as an economic coalition, but as a force reshaping the global balance of power.
