The Value of BRICS Expansion Despite Future Challenges

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have all been invited to join the BRICS club, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as of the start of the next year. The declaration was made following the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

Despite the potential obstacles, the choice to grow the group represents a great advancement in global cooperation and progress. The growth of BRICS is a historic development with significant geopolitical and economic ramifications. The significance of this expansion cannot be overstated, despite any obstacles that may need to be surmounted.

Multipolarity and Diverse Representation

To promote a more inclusive and diversified representation of countries from various regions is one of the main goals of the BRICS expansion.

The inclusion of nations from South America, the Middle East, and Africa strengthens the group's geopolitical influence and advances a multipolar international system. This action targets Western powers' hegemony in international organisations and financial entities like the UN, World Bank, and IMF, which have come under fire for favouring wealthy countries and ignoring the needs of developing nations.

The current international institutions have frequently come under fire for allowing political and economic inequities to continue. Particularly developing nations have complained about the unfair treatment they receive within these agencies. The BRICS expansion gives these countries a different forum on which to voice their issues and cooperate to address global difficulties.

By establishing a financial organisation that focuses on the requirements of developing countries as an alternative to the conventional financial institutions dominated by Western powers, the New Development Bank, founded by the BRICS in 2015, strengthens this effort.

Diversity in Unity

The growth of BRICS demonstrates the strength of unity in variety. BRICS signifies a cooperative effort to create a more inclusive international order by bringing together countries with various cultural, economic, and political backgrounds.

The potential for fruitful international collaboration, especially in the face of difficulties, is demonstrated by the capacity to cross divides and find common ground among nations with various ideologies and objectives.

Although the intention to broaden BRICS is good, difficulties will definitely arise. It might be challenging to balance the needs and goals of a bigger and more varied set of nations. To ensure the effectiveness of the group, the new members, who each have different economic and political concerns, will need to find common ground and coordinate their goals.

Additionally, the growth might bring about dissenting opinions and eventual disputes inside the group. Diplomacy, compromise, and a common dedication to the BRICS' founding values will be necessary to strike a balance between the interests of current members and newcomers.

Although obstacles will definitely appear, the potential advantages of a more varied, cohesive, and powerful group make the pursuit of BRICS enlargement worthwhile. Cooperative programs will be essential in influencing a more just and multipolar world order as the world continues to change.
