How to Navigate US-China Standoff

Updated: Aug 18, 2023

China, a rising East Asian powerhouse, has recently cemented its position on the world arena, causing a dynamic shift in the geopolitical environment. China's economic power has been obvious for a long time, but its political and military clout is increasingly growing as well.

China's defence minister recently attended a conference in Moscow, challenging the existing quo and delving into the nuances of the US-China confrontation. Global interest has been drawn to China's military might, which is frequently characterised by cutting-edge technology and innovation.

China's defence minister emphasised in Moscow the value of engagement and cooperation in the field of defence innovation. China's desire to be viewed as a peacekeeper is highlighted by the announcement of expanded collaborative military exercises.

China's strategic alliances within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) with nations like Iran and Belarus highlight its dedication to a more extensive global partnership. China's idea of a linked Eurasian economic and security landscape is best exemplified by the SCO, which is governed by China and Russia. Through these relationships, China is able to contest the West's historical hegemony and pave the way for a multipolar world.

The President Xi Jinping-proposed Global Security Initiative is a key component of China's international engagement. This strategy opposes Western inclinations towards unilateral sanctions and places a strong emphasis on communication and talks as key instruments of global diplomacy.

China promotes this strategy as a means of resolving international conflicts, as demonstrated by its facilitation of the diplomatic breakthrough between Saudi Arabia and Iran. This vision highlights China's commitment to dialogue-driven diplomacy and stands as a counterpoint to Western practices.

The defence minister of China did not hold back in criticising a "hegemonic approach," a veiled allusion to the United States. Due to its interventionist foreign policies and attempts to impose its will on other countries, the US is seen from China's perspective as being the cause of the current state of chaos in the world. This criticism highlights China's view of the US as an international instability cause.

The narrative of cooperation and partnership is further strengthened by Russia's alliance with China. Moscow and Beijing's strategic alignment is exemplified by their long-standing cooperation, which is displayed through high-level delegation exchanges and joint military exercises.

This unity was palpable during the Moscow Conference on International Security, where China's defense minister engaged with military leaders from various countries, further emphasizing their global outreach.

China's message in Moscow shows a country eager to challenge the current global power dynamics while reaching out to other nations in partnership. Is a new diplomatic era, one in which China takes centre stage, just beginning to take shape?

While the US continues to be a dominant force, China's unrelenting scepticism and challenge to American influence globally point to a potential change in the world's order.
